I was researching for better performing laptops for my son for Music Production and Gaming. I came across some terminologies that were new to me … I getting older and distant from computer hardware :). But to help myself and others, I just thought of documenting this here.
Hard Drives
PCIe NVMe 1TB M.2 SSD
This was the specification of the Hard Drive in the specs of Asus ROG Laptop
So what is PCIe, NVMe, M.2, SSD?
PCIe is PCI-express Bus. This is the connection on the Motherboard.
NVMe stands for non-volatile memory express
M.2 is the Form Factor of the SSD. This is a new form factor(size) of the drives. The current common available SSD’s are 2.5″ SATA.
SSD stands for Solid State Drives
SATA III Hard Drive | SATA III SSD | NVMe SSD |
~100 MB/s Read | 530 MB/s Read | 3,500 MB/s Read |
~100 MB/s Write | 500 MB/s Write | 3,000 MB/s Write |
